Spencer Glacier
Adventures in a two passenger airplane can get lonely.
Woodsen and I love sharing adventures and memories together, but having good friends to adventure with really enriches the experience.
The more fun adventures we share with friends, the more we miss their company when we head out of town alone.
Fortunately, our group of friends with Super Cubs is growing, and we are trying to be more intentional about getting out on adventures together. We build relationships, experience Alaska, and it’s a great opportunity for pilots of every level to learn from each other.
On this trip we headed out with our good friends, Jason & Britta, to check out the Spencer Glacier and planned on meeting Meredith and Vance there.
Spencer Lake is a short 30 minute Super Cub flight from Anchorage, but is also accessed frequently by train, fat bike, and snow-machines (when the area is open to snow-machines). There’s also a public use cabin that looks over the lake. It’s a steep climb to the cabin, but there are plenty of switchbacks on the trail to make the climb a little more gradual.
The lake was bustling with snow machine tours and groups of people on fat bikes. Fortunately, there was plenty of glacier to explore and you could easily explore an area of the glacier by yourself.
My favorite thing about Alaska is finding the intense colors in nature. Bright blue glacial ice definitely is pretty high on the list of my favorites, and I’m completely happy left alone exploring a glacier with a camera.
We ran into a group of our friends that had biked to the glacier.
While the ice appears massive and unmovable, glaciers are dynamic, and they still calve in the winter. Be careful and always be aware! If you want to read a story about a close call and glacial ice, read my blog post about our experience at Lake George. Ice can be dangerous, so be careful!
See the massive chunks of ice on the ground? We didn’t stay in this cave long.
The tail feathers continue to serve as a great changing table.
There was enough snow machine traffic on the lake to make skate skiing possible. We skated across the lake to a small iceberg.
Thankful for my adventurous, lady friends: Alicia, Britta and Meredith (5 months pregnant).
Atlee had fun sitting in the front seat with Papa on the way back to Anchorage. Of course her natural instinct was to go for the magnetos and the mixture, the only two things that a baby really shouldn’t touch in flight, so her flight lesson was mostly about self control.
